They pay me to watch their brats, which is more than fair, so I don't really mind. It is seriously exhausting, otherwise I would feel pretty bad about taking their money. (Babysitting money is what paid for my crane tattoo. I am putting away the $100 they gave me today toward my next one.)
I joined a local writing group on Meetup, and at the time it was inactive, but then I got involved and it sort of snowballed because I am a reluctant-but-natural leader. Then we left Meetup because it cost money and that's stupid. So now we aren't really growing, but the regulars are all decent enough writers, which is nice because it sucks when you have to critique strangers with zero potential.
Anyway, it's a pain because I'm in charge so I have to arrange meeting space, but the actual writing/talking about writing/critique sessions are useful and inspiring, so I recommend it, if you can find a group near you that's not enormous. (For critiquing purposes especially smaller just seems to work better.)
