Yuletide Round-Up Post
Jan. 1st, 2016 11:41 amFor posterity, here’s what i wrote for Yuletide. Seven fics in total in seven different fandoms. (I wish every single one of them was better, but that’s life, I suppose.)
The Color and the Noise, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, Taylor/Doug, NC17. If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with.
The Stubborn Witness Of the Everyday, Big Eden, Pike/Henry, NC17. Henry’s not known for his portraits.
I’ll Be the One, But I’m a Cheerleader, Megan/Graham, PG. The road to happily ever after, with a few new firsts along the way.
Adnascentia, Creep, Aaron/Josef, R. Aaron's got a dozen different excuses for why he went to the park to meet Josef, but all they are is excuses.
Plan B, Ice Princess, Gen/Ann, PG. Gen walked away from her Plan A. Ann's Plan A just didn't work out, but Plan B's not always such a bad thing.
Playing Chess With Fate, Parks and Recreation, Sonia Knope-Wyatt/Oliver Traeger-Perkins, PG. The thing about destiny is that it's inescapable. Even if it means admitting your mom might have been right all along.
And Your Moonlight Too, Veritas: The Quest, Solomon/Vincent, PG. Above all, always come up with a believable cover story.
( Rambling about the fics I wrote under the cut, for your ignoring pleasure. )
And the gifts I got, which I bragged about on tumblr but forgot to crosspost here:
The Bridge Of Souls by Damkianna. Veritas: The Quest, Calvin/Nikko, PG. "Yeah, yeah, yeah," Nikko said, interrupting. "Don't go off alone, don't fall in any pits, don't touch anything that looks like it could kill you, don't touch anything that doesn't look like it could kill you because it probably could anyway." Post-finale trope bingo: Nikko and Cal get kidnapped, huddle for warmth, form a soulbond, and discover they're sort of into each other and also can maybe save the world.
Textual Poaching by Eisoj5. Redshirts, Andy/Jimmy, PG. "You think Andy is the main character," Jenkins said.
Both are loaded with all my favorite tropes, perfectly in character, clever, and best of all, long. If you haven't read them yet, give them a try. You won't be sorry.

Dear Yuletide Writer
Oct. 17th, 2014 07:28 pmHello! I am very excited for another Yuletide season, and I hope you are as well. I've been mostly out of fandom this year, but not participating in YT at this point would feel too much like skipping Christmas, so here I am.
Thank you very much in advance for writing for me! I hope you have a lot of fun and don't stress at all, because I am honestly pretty easy to please.
Things I love: friends to lovers, fluff, fluffy smut, regular smut, Christmas cheer, soulbonding, huddling for warmth, trapped together, wing fic, cuddling, kissing, plot, AUs, crossovers, long fic. (I also enjoy shorter fic, but I am definitely not someone who won't read 20K and squee over every word, if that's your inclination.)
Things I don't love: Incest, BDSM, a/b/o, character death, breakup fic, the 'always a boy/girl' branch of genderswap ('woke up in the wrong body' is totally cool, however). I also have this weird aversion to blood coming out of people's eyes (long RL medical story) which probably wouldn't feature in any of these fandoms, but there it is all the same.
If you want to look at previous years' letters/likes/dislikes, you can find them on my LJ tag here.
I am also carolinecrane on AO3, LJ, and tumblr.

This year I wrote four fics in four different fandoms for Yuletide. It was a bit of a struggle, ngl, mainly because I haven't written *anything* in so long that I wasn't sure I remembered how.

Yuletide Recs (part one?)
Dec. 27th, 2013 06:05 pmGuys, I got the greatest Yuletide gifts this year! I have been gifted with not one, but TWO wonderful, meaty, LONG Halloweentown fics. I feel so spoiled, you don't even know. So I'm going to talk about them here, and then you should go read them, because they're wonderful and they deserve so much more love.
Trick RSVP Treat, Halloweentown, Marnie Piper/Luke, 12,090 words. When Luke accidentally proposes, he's stunned by Marnie's acceptance...and even more stunned by the work required to hold a Cromwell wedding.
Oh, this fic. It's so lovely, from the descriptions of Marnie and Luke's house to the wonderful characterization. It's told from Luke's POV, and captures perfectly exactly why it's always been Marnie for him. It's the fic I never knew I needed. Plus there's a delightful hint of Dylan/Ethan, and I'm never going to say no to that.
Mortal Jeopardy, Halloweentown, Ethan Dalloway/Dylan Piper, 10,786 words. Marnie's studying abroad, so this Halloween, it's up to Dylan and Ethan to save Halloweentown.
An adventure-filled and adorable romp through both Halloweentown, and Dylan's sad lack of a social life. Dylan/Ethan has always been kind of a back of the mind, 'what if' pairing for me when I happen to watch the third or fourth movies, but this fic has cemented them solidly in my mind as a fantastic idea. I love the idea, and the way they get together here is really fun. Plus there's a hint of Marnie/Aneesa (+Amazons!) femslash that I adore.
( And under the cut are recs for six more stories I've enjoyed in the archive. )
Those are my favorites out of what I've read so far. There may be more as I keep poring through the archive. I still have a lot of reading to do.

Yuletide stories what I wrote
Jan. 1st, 2013 12:07 pmNow that Yuletide authors have been revealed, I can list the stories I wrote this year. For posterity or whatever. Most of these are tiny little fandoms you've probably never heard of, but there are eight stories under the cut nonetheless.
( Links to AO3 this way. )
And so ends another Yuletide. I swear I am not signing up next year. I always write so much and stress myself out needlessly and it's ridiculous. The story I got this year was so fantastic, though. That makes it really hard not to go back for more. At least I don't have to think about it for ten more months.
Currently distracting myself by writing way too much for Fandom Stocking, but once that's over I swear I am going to get serious. About...something.

it's the most wonderful time of the year
Dec. 25th, 2012 10:42 amThe Yuletide Archive is open! Rare fic for days, in all shapes, sizes, and flavors. If you're looking for something to do in the next couple days, make yourself a cup of peppermint cocoa and settle down with AO3 and the reader of your choice to peruse the archive.
You can start with my gift, if you want, because it is STUNNING. With This Ring, Pike/Henry, Big Eden, 4K+, and so amazingly in character. I just want to wrap myself up in it and live there forever.
There's plenty of other stuff to read as well, of course. I wrote eight stories total, five in the main archive and three ficlets that will be revealed tomorrow. Once authors are revealed I can tell you which ones I wrote.
In conclusion: Yuletide! It's the gift we can all unwrap, no matter what we celebrate! Merry Yuletide, everyone.

there is no subject
Dec. 5th, 2012 08:52 amI finally discovered the magic trick that will get me to crosspost consistently. All LJ had to do was completely bork the post interface! So now I will just post to DW and you can comment wherever. I don't care.
So I'm reading this book called How to Make People Like You In 90 Seconds Or Less. It's about body language, and how to use it to establish a rapport with other people. I always say that the key to my professional success is that I don't really care what other people think of me, so I don't waste time being passive aggressive. If you don't like me, oh well. Here's how things are going to go, and that's the end of it. It's pretty efficient, and it has the side affect of making people want me to like them, for some reason.
I've employed this approach when job hunting over the years as well, and I've always said that the reason I've had success in a really tight job market is that I always go into an interview not caring whether or not they hire me. They'd be lucky to have me! It tends to make you a lot more relaxed.
Well, for the first time in my life I actually care whether or not I get a job, so I'm brushing up on my first impression skills. It's really very interesting, to be honest. I would recommend this book for introverts who have to fake it in order to get ahead or even just make a good impression. There are some great tips in there.
Next on my list is Sixty Seconds to You're Hired, which I have read before, but I need to refresh my memory. The only problem is that I tend to listen to nonfiction, and the author read that one herself. That was not the best decision. Her voice is pretty irritating.
I've written quite a bit lately! I just can't show you any of it. My Yuletide fic is still not done, but I have an outline for the rest of it, so fingers crossed I'll get it done pretty soon here. Yesterday I took a break to write a couple things for Fandom Stocking, but today I'll get back to my Yuletide Fic. Honest. I'm going. Here I go.
ETA: I just totally thought of something I should have asked for in my fandom stocking. A Will/Finn header for my LJ! Though I would be hard-pressed to let this one go, I love it so much. Still, there's been so much hugging and touching and longing looks on the show lately that it would be glorious. But it's not worth making Medie edit my entry for a pairing that squicks 90% of the population. Alas.

Yuletide:
Yuletide authors were revealed sometime shortly after midnight (I know because I happened to notice while I was posting the fic I finished yesterday) which means I can claim the six fics I wrote. First up, the fics I wrote for my actual recipient:
Together An Ocean (2987 words)
Fandom: Ghost Hunters RPF
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Steve Gonsalves/Dave Tango
Characters: Kris Williams, Amy Bruni, Kristyn Gartland, Jason Hawes, Grant Wilson, Steve Gonsalves, Dave Tango
Summary: When Amy joins the team, she already has plenty of experience with investigating. It's her fellow teammates she has a lot to learn about.
A/N: With many thanks to
jengeorge and
goddessdster for looking this one over. I didn't make you look over the scene I added at the end, since you were just doing me a favor to begin with, but I think it fixes what you both felt was lacking in the original version.
the improbability of perpetual motion (1822 words)
Fandom: No Ordinary Family
Rating: General Audiences
Characters: Katie Andrews, Stephanie Powell, Daphne Powell
Summary: Dr. Powell's the superhero, and Katie's the sidekick. But sidekicks are pretty important too.
A/N: With many thanks to
writingpathways for the beta. I was busy panicking about the Ghost Hunters fic being awful, so I spent a weekend learning the entire canon for "No Ordinary Family" and ended up writing this. Which is how I came to have two fics for my original recipient in the end.
And the rest were treats I wrote just because I couldn't resist the requests. The first two are So You Think You Can Dance RPF, both set during season seven, plus a Child's Christmas In Wales fic I wrote on a whim and then bit my nails over until reveals, and a Camp/Glee crossover that's not really much of a Glee fic at all:
romance in five acts (1244 words)
Fandom: So You Think You Can Dance RPF
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Billy Bell/Robert Roldan
Summary: Billy always knew he wasn't going to win.
A/N: This is the last one I wrote (hence the lame title; they grew increasingly lamer the closer the posting deadline got) and I wasn't that confident about writing Billy, but in the end I think it turned out okay. Plus, I mean, Billy and Robert have a history. There's a spark there from the start.
Pas de Deux (3630 words)
Fandom: So You Think You Can Dance RPF
Rating: Mature
Relationships: Ivan Koumaev/Travis Wall
Characters: Allison Holker
Summary: It's season seven, and Ivan's watching Travis' star rise.
A/N: With many thanks to
cinderlily for looking this one over for me.
Parables of Sun Light (1600 words)
Fandom: A Child's Christmas In Wales
Rating: General Audiences
Relationships: Jim/Dan
Characters: Jim, Dan, Jack, Narrator (A Child's Christmas in Wales)
Summary: Sometimes growing up means growing apart. Sometimes it doesn't.
A/N: This one's the result of going to see a coworker participate in a dramatic reading of holiday stories, and then downloading and listening to Dylan Thomas' reading of the entire text on repeat while I sewed Christmas gifts.
Bravery Practice (3561 words)
Fandom: Camp (2003), Glee
Rating: PG13
Relationships: Vlad Baumann/Michael Flores, Kurt Hummel/Noah Puckerman, Rachel Berry/Finn Hudson
Summary: It's only because Michael's tired of being alone on Christmas.
A/N: And finally, when I saw that someone had requested a Camp/Glee crossover, I just couldn't resist. For a long time I couldn't figure out how to start it, then I didn't have enough time to make it a true crossover, so in the end the Glee parts are more of a backdrop than anything. I think the promise of Kurt/Puck has drawn in readers under false pretenses. Sorry about that! (They're there, it's just very much background to the actual action.)
And another Sandlot rec:
This one is not a Yuletide fic, but it was written for me especially by the lovely
jengeorge, who is not only the beta of, like, my dreams, but also just a really cool person. So the fact that she took it upon herself to write a fic she knew I desperately wanted and didn't think I could request (before I figured out that The Sandlot was a choice for Yuletide this year) fills me with all kinds of joy.
Plus, she's a good writer. I am slowly dragging her down into the fic writing abyss with me. It's what friends are for!
Look Beside You, Benny/Smalls, PG13. Go read it and give her some love. She deserves it.
Picspam
( One Princess dress and some fannish picspam under the cut. )
There is also some Finn/Will fic here, in case you missed it last night. That's right, I was posting Glee fic at midnight last night, after spending the evening drinking wine at my sister's and editing fic while we watched Inception. If it's really true that what you're doing at midnight is what you'll do all year, I suppose that means I will be writing DIWWCF fic for awhile yet. I could think of worse ways to spend 2011.

Musical Advent Calendar: Day Twenty-Four
Dec. 24th, 2010 10:09 amIt's Christmas Eve! Or, more accurately, Christmas Eve Day, since apparently Christmas Eve refers to the nighttime portion of the day only*. Anyway, usually by now we are all sick to death of Christmas music, so instead of any more traditional carols, on the last day of the calendar I offer you six songs about snow**.
Jeremy Messersmith -- Snow Day
The Leisure Society -- The Last Of the Melting Snow
Van Morrison -- Snow In San Anselmo
Pat Green f/Natalie Maines -- Snowing On Raton
Ella Fitzgerald -- Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
The Cure -- Snow In Summer
Enjoy! I wish you all a very happy Christmas, whether you plan on sitting around a tree with family opening presents, or if it's just a regular old Saturday in your world. I hope either way it will be filled with good cheer and good food. The princess dress is nearly done, and I need to go finish that, but y'all, it is something to see. I can't wait to show you!
One last thing before I go:
Since it is Christmas Eve (Day), that means in less than 24 hours, Yuletide stories will be revealed. I promised
jengeorge I'd let her know when the Yuletide Madness portion of Yuletide opens for last-minute stocking stuffers. I didn't forget! It just hasn't happened yet. It's their first year completely on AO3, and the girl who usually does that portion just had a baby, so it's not happening the usual way. More's the pity!
However! If any of you are at home and wondering what you could do with your day, check out this post for an explanation of Yuletide Madness and a link to posted prompts, so you can write treats. And if you want to wait until Madness opens, it'll give you something to do during those glumpy, post-Christmas days before the new year.
Personally, I will be in a cabin in Pigeon Forge with my family during those glumpy post-Christmas days, enduring forced activities such as Dollywood! And The Titanic Experience! But I have an iTouch, so I can probably write on the sly***.
___________________________________________________________
* My father is very particular about that. Seriously, he scolds me if he hears me using the term 'Christmas Eve' to refer to the entire day. I'm almost 40; I don't really enjoy being scolded by my father. So don't tell him I said it was Christmas Eve already.
** Really this is just an excuse to post some Van Morrison. Though he does mention Christmas. And pancake houses! Can't really go wrong there.
*** I'm not obsessed. It's a coping mechanism.

Musical Advent Calendar: Day Ten
Dec. 10th, 2010 06:06 amToday I give you a track from Neil Diamond's 2009 Christmas release, "A Cherry Cherry Christmas", just because I can. Noah Puckerman would approve of this one, too, even though it's a Christmas song and he's a Jew, so it's not like he really cares about Christmas music or anything.
Neil Diamond -- You Make It Feel Like Christmas
Here, have the title song too, just because I know you are wondering what the hell a Cherry Cherry Christmas is, exactly:
Neil Diamond -- A Cherry Cherry Christmas
I put up a few tracks from this album last year as well, but they were mostly traditional. These two are fun in a non-traditional way. (And the second one is worth it just to hear Neil name-check "Sweet Caroline".)
You guys, rather than do anything as productive as write the last part of my high school series, or perhaps the next part of DIWWCF, or even that Christmas fix-it fic I started Wednesday morning, I spent last night poking around random Dear Yuletide Writer letters. People have requested the craziest stuff and lo, it is awesome. I may, in fact, be dling the complete canon for a particular fandom just so I can write a stocking stuffer for which I was inspired at 5:15 this morning while I was lying in bed trying to convince myself to get up.
I do love Yuletide madness. And I've already posted two -- TWO! -- full stories for my original recipient, so I don't even have to feel guilty about poking around the Yuletide letters.
( A To Do list for my own sake, cut for your ignoring pleasure. )

a list of things
Nov. 28th, 2010 09:34 am+ Someone on Delicious has tagged my fic masterlist with 'weird stuff'. I can't decide whether to be kind of proud or just LOL a lot. I guess I'll go with the latter.
+ The only reason I find these things is because I tag long fics on Delicious to read on a rainy day*, then I click links, and when you're reading what you write, eventually you stumble upon your own stuff.
+ I think there's another leak under my house. I don't even want to talk about it. There's nothing to say. It's Sunday anyway, and I have fangirls (well, fangirl plus one) coming over today to watch Glee, so I can't shut off the water until tomorrow when there's someone around to deal with it. These things always happen on Sundays. See above re: weird.
+ I have made a red velvet sugar cookie Cookie Cake Pie for the occasion. It will either be delicious or revolting. I'll try to remember to take pictures. Here is a lousy picture of the chocolate peanut butter version I made for our fangirl trip two summers ago.
+ Do you know what I noticed the other day? My boarding school AU never made
gleenewsletter. I should probably post my fic somewhere other than
puckurt, like, say,
gleefic. ETA: Aaaaand done. We'll see how long it takes before I freak out and leave the comm. I have a fear of large comms. I don't know why, no. Mostly I think it's because I'm crazy**.
+ I am supposed to be working out and cleaning my house right now. Then I have to shower and go pick up
ophelias_heart and I still haven't even eaten breakfast. I have written nearly 500 words of fic this morning, though that is nothing to be proud of, considering.
+ Speaking of fic writing, my Yuletide fic is currently sitting at around 1400 words, which is past the minimum, so I should be all, "Yay Team Me!" Except that I think it sucks, you guys. It's boring and it sucks and I don't know how to make it good when nobody's kissing anybody or thinking about kissing anybody. Writing gen fic stresses me out! Sad but true. I might have to resort to plan B, which frankly isn't any less scary. It's probably good that today's Glee-a-thon day. I need to take a break from thinking about writing fic.
+ Wednesday is December 1st. What the hell you guys. How did that happen? Good thing I'm on top of the Advent Calendar already.

* If the value of 'rainy' equals 'when I am procrastinating on something major and have done every other thing I can think of to avoid it, including catching up on all the weird problems I've been ignoring at work'. Which I did last week. True story. I'm glad, though, because tomorrow is going to be crazy enough without a bunch of weird problems continuing to loom. Then again, 'weird' appears to be the default setting for my life, so there you go.
** Actually it's because I don't like to use filters to read my friends list and the massive flood of fic posts I don't care about gets overwhelming really quickly.

OMGYAY THE SANDLOT IS ON THE LIST OF YULETIDE NOMINATED FANDOMS AFTER ALL.
I checked after noms closed but before the new list was out and didn't see it, so I thought I'd blown my chance to request it by forgetting to nominate it in the first place. But some other awesome rareslash fan totally had my back! See, this is why I keep going back to Yuletide.I wonder how I could get away with requesting all Sandlot fics.
Hey, so I saw The Social Network yesterday. Depressing! But also hilarious. Say a girl wanted to read some Divya/that intense Winklevoss brother fic, where would she look for something like that?
(Social Network is also a Yuletide fandom. Perhaps I could spare one request after all.)
I find myself not nearly as busy as I expected to be today. I believe I will use my time wisely to work on some fan fiction. But not Social Network fan fiction. I might need some more coffee.
