If you've been hanging around long enough to see more than one of these advent calendars, you have probably noticed that one of my very favorite Christmas songs is Please Come Home For Christmas. I'm particularly fond of Jon Bon Jovi's version, but I will take anything, pretty much. I'm not proud.

As such, I collect versions of the song, and this year I have two new additions to share with you. The first is a Motown classic, and the second is a recording from Kelly Clarkson's new Christmas album. If you hate this song...sorry? I'll be back tomorrow with some acapella.

Today's featured artist is Mark O'Connor, a bluegrass musician hailing from the great state of Washington. This year he released an album called "An Appalachian Christmas", featuring some bluegrass interpretations of old favorites, as well as several guest artists. Including Allison Kraus, of course, because it's illegal to put out any kind of bluegrass album without an appearance by Allison Kraus*.

Mark O'Connor -- The Christmas Song
Mark O'Connor -- Carol Of the Bells
Mark O'Connor -- Winter Wonderland

* Unfortunately her song didn't make the cut, mostly because it's not technically a Christmas song.

Today's selections are courtesy of actress/chanteuse Lea DeLaria, who you may know as Big Boo from Orange Is the New Black, currently available on Netflix and if you're not watching it, man, you are missing out.

I digress! When she's not acting or doing stand-up, Lea records torch ballads and jazz music. Her album of Christmas songs is really fun, and today I share two of my favorite tracks with you.

Lea DeLaria -- Santa Claus Is Coming to Town
Lea DeLaria -- Christmas Time Is Here

My goodness, I meant to post this morning, but the day completely got away from me. So just under the wire, it's time for the eighth annual musical advent calendar! Eight years. Eight fucking years.

I digress! Since Hanukkah is already in full swing, today's selection is a swing version of Rock of Ages, sung in English and Hebrew. It grows on you.

Kenny Ellis -- Rock of Ages

Man, November really got away from me. I think December snuck up on everyone this year.

In keeping with tradition, today I offer you three versions of that perennial classic "Auld Lang Syne". Something to carry us through to the new year is just the thing on this last day of Advent. And as an added bonus, I threw in another classic New Year's song.

Merry Christmas to all of you celebrating. And to those of you who aren't, I am finally done spamming you with another year of the musical advent calendar! Hurray! Sorry, guys. Thanks for putting up with me. <3

Sufjan Stevens -- Auld Lang Syne
Andrew Bird -- Auld Lang Syne
The Smithereens -- Auld Lang Syne

Today I only have one song for you, but it's a good one. Sir Paul McCartney with a vegan* rendition of the classic The Christmas Song. Enjoy!

Paul McCartney -- The Christmas Song

I am headed to work. Enjoy the last of your holiday weekend, kids! I hope you all have the next few days off to celebrate however you see fit.

* No, seriously, he changed the lyric from 'a turkey and some mistletoe' to 'some holly and some mistletoe'. Oh, Paul. Linda would have approved.

I am sort of torn about today's entry in the calendar. On the one hand, it is pretty hilarious that this exists. On the other hand, it is so bad. So, so bad. I'm really sorry, you guys.

Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta -- Baby It's Cold Outside
Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta -- Auld Lang Syne/Christmas Time Is Here

I really hate Baby It's Cold Outside, no matter who's singing it, but in this one at least the roles are reversed? Olivia Newton-John will be singing the part of the date rapist for your listening pleasure. You can hear how much fun they're having together, and how ridiculous they both find the entire experience, so it's sort of sweet. But I can't listen to it anymore, because I seriously hate that song.

Unrelated to the above, I wrote a holiday-type fic thing for the puckurt Chrismukkah exchange on tumblr. It's posted on my AO3 now, if you're into that sort of thing.

While You're Busy Making Other Plans, Puck/Kurt, PG, ~1000 words. Warnings: Kidfic and schmooop.

I am working today and tomorrow, and then I'm off until New Year's Eve. (I can't believe the library's open on New Year's Eve, but whatever.) I hope to get lots of writing done at work, because I still have a pinch hit and a treat to finish for Yuletide, and there are plenty of fandom stockings to fill. Have a great weekend, everyone! I hope you're all done with your shopping so you can stay in and enjoy the anticipation. And the cookies. Also I hope there are cookies.

I confess that I'm relieved that whole End Days business did not come to fruition, because if the world had ended before I got around to putting the Muppet Christmas Carol soundtrack on the calendar, I would have felt I'd failed you all.

Crisis averted! And to celebrate, three songs from the best adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic ever filmed. I feel sure Mr. Dickens would have approved.

One More Sleep Til Christmas
It Feels Like Christmas
Thankful Heart

Today's selections come from the album 40 Years: A Charlie Brown Christmas, which, as the name implies, is a tribute to the 40th anniversary of A Charlie Brown Christmas. It is nothing at all like the classic Vince Guaraldi soundtrack to the Christmas special, though a couple of those songs are covered on this album. But there are a few gems, and the Chaka Khan version of The Christmas Song is kind of hilarious, ngl.

Vanessa Williams -- Just Like Me
Toni Braxton -- It's the Most Wonderful Time Of the Year
Brian McKnight -- Christmas Time Is Here
Chaka Khan -- The Christmas Song

Do you know what I realized the other day? This is not, in fact, the 7th annual musical advent calendar. It's actually the eighth. That's right, according my iTunes I started this in 2005. I thought it was 2006! Go figure.

On to today's artist, Joe McElderry. Who, you ask? IIRC he's the chap who won X Factor the year One Direction appeared as also-rans. Just goes to show. But he's got a lovely voice, and he produced a Christmas album, so here are a few tracks:

I Believe In Father Christmas
Adeste Fideles
Last Christmas

Since Mr. McElderry is both British and openly gay, I like to think that he recorded "Last Christmas" as an homage to the great George Michael. My mother's opinion, upon hearing the song, was, "This is dumb." Thanks for the insight, Mom.

She says it doesn't really make any sense. She's not wrong! But it's a fun song anyway, and I know a lot of people here love it. (I'm always going to be partial to the Jimmy Eat World version, of course, but there's room for everyone on my iTunes.)

I...might be a little sleep-deprived. Or over-stressed. Possibly both.

Day eighteen already? How did that happen? I still have baking to do.

Today's artist is the Indigo Girls, with two tracks from their 2010 Christmas album. As I mentioned on the first day of Hanukkah, it took awhile (two years!) for this album to grow on me, but I've really started to enjoy it. Today I offer you two original songs from the album. The one is not a Biebs cover, much as I wish it was.

Indigo Girls -- Mistletoe
Indigo Girls -- It Really Is (A Wonderful Life)

Today on the calendar are two versions of the same song. One is a rather haunting Maroon 5 rendition, and the other an a cappella version by the season 3 Sing-Off contestants.

Maroon 5 -- Happy Christmas (War Is Over)
Sing-Off Contestants -- Happy Christmas (War Is Over)

You may have heard that Cee Lo released a Christmas album this year. Judging by the album art alone, we all knew it was going to be a hot mess. But I was curious, so I downloaded, and do you know, it's actually really fun. I was as surprised as you, flist.

Below are four tracks, because I couldn't narrow it down any further than that. Cee Lo singing "River" is lovelier than it has any right to be, and there's also a cover of my very favorite Christmas song, "Please Come Home For Christmas". Also there are Muppets providing backup on "All I Need Is Love". Kermit features pretty heavily, if you're into that sort of thing.

Cee Lo -- What Christmas Means to Me
Cee Lo -- All I Need Is Love
Cee Lo -- River
Cee Lo -- Please Come Home For Christmas

I have so much to do today. Grocery shopping and cooking white chicken chili for our work Christmas party, then I have to wrap a zillion presents and package them up so my brother-in-law can ship them to New Jersey in time for Santa to do his thing. After that I have to go to my sister's place to arrange all the cookies we made yesterday on trays for all the people on our list.

Starting tomorrow I work seven days in a row, so I need to get stuff done today. Just as soon as I finish this cup of coffee.

I think, in light of recent events, today is a good day for the comfort of some classic John Denver Christmas music.

John Denver -- Coventry Carol
John Denver -- O Holy Night
John Denver -- Silent Night
John Denver -- Aspenglow

Be safe, everyone. <3

It is really cold outside today! Feels like winter. Finally.

So Sufjan Stevens put out a Christmas album this year. It is, predictably, kind of weird, but in among the weirdness and one minute track samples, he managed to sneak in a few gorgeous renditions of some traditional hymns from my childhood. I offer you two of them here, along with one of his charming-yet-quirky original songs. About lumberjacks, sort of. Weirdo.

Good news! I have gotten my hands on the elusive Hanukkah song from the new Glee Christmas album. I'm not going to post most of the songs, because I think they are dreadful and they always choose such terrible carols anyway. But here are two that are just weird enough for me to enjoy:

Glee Cast -- Hanukkah Oh Hanukkah
Glee Cast -- Feliz Navidad

The first one, I believe, is Mark Salling and Jacob Artist, and the second, if I'm not mistaken, sounds like Kevin McHale? Whatever. They're the two songs on there I can stand.

I hope all of you who celebrate are having a joyous and stress-free Hanukkah season. And I hope that all of you who are gearing up for Christmas are more relaxed about it than me. I plan to write out cards tonight at work while it's dead. They might even make it to Europe before the actual holiday this year!

Today's selections come to you courtesy of [personal profile] tao, who sent them to me. They're both songs by Irish artists Carol Keogh and the City Fathers. One is a version of Joni Mitchell's classic "River", because I know everyone collects versions of that song. I'd say you're welcome, but again, I'm just the messenger today.

River
I Believe In Father Christmas

Today on the calendar we leave behind the pop songs for awhile in favor of two versions of one of my favorite hymns. It reminds me of being a kid growing up in New England, where they sang the right songs in church and not the stuff they're singing these days. Get off my lawn.

Indigo Girls -- In the Bleak Midwinter
Joe McElderry -- In the Bleak Midwinter

Continuing in the pop music vein today, have "Candy Cane Christmas" by Darius Rucker, aka 'Hootie' of Hootie and the Blowfish fame. He's a country singer these days. He even had a song on the Monte Carlo soundtrack! Because all roads lead to Cory Monteith.

I love Selena Gomez. She's lovely and adorable and starred in that one movie with Cory, and also I enjoy her music. Don't judge me. Anyway, here she is singing a very faithful rendition of "Winter Wonderland" which I hope you will enjoy.
